Soccer and Graduation

Filed under: Teaching + Training, The Funny Farm, Web Of Tuition — admin @ 12:44 am

In the summer of 1994, the soccer world invaded US shores. The World Cup was held here. I was tending bar in Orlando, Florida when the onslaught began. The Republic of Ireland had chosen Orlando as their US headquarters. At the time, I had no idea that manager Jackie Charlton’s decision would impact my life in innumerable ways.

Financially, the World Cup was a coup for bartenders. The Irish that flocked to the States wore T shirts that proclaimed “We’re only here for the beer!” Estimates put the number of Jackie’s Army at close to 30,000 in Orlando to cheer on their team. Every bar in town had a significant spike in sales during the month of June in 1994. The Irish were very good patrons. The only trouble they ever caused was when they were informed that in this country bars actually close.

The Irish were also very loyal to whatever bar they had latched onto. Americans travel abroad and frequent as many different establishments as they can to get the true flavor of the place they are visiting. The Irish find a bar they like and go there every day. They don’t care about the true flavor of a place. They operate under the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

It was this loyalty that brought Andrew and Dave into my bar every day during the tournament. They became more than just customers to me; they quickly became friends. When I closed my bar, we would go together to find another one. At one point late in the month, they actually cancelled their reservations at their hotel and slept on the couch and floor of my apartment. The only payment I requested was that they take me to a match.

Ireland took on Mexico in the final preliminary match…and my friends took me with them. I was amazed at the costumes worn by the Irish faithful. Every one of them was festooned in what can only be described as green graduation stoles, containing pins of an innumerable sort. One couple stood out in their green, white, and orange buy cap and gown, shamrocks springing out from everywhere as if they were camouflaged soldiers trying desperately to be seen. I have never been witness to such a spectacle! No one ever sat down, and the fans of both nations sang the entire 90 plus minutes. Irish and Mexican nationals were hugging and singing together, trading pins and buttons and buying each other lagers and cervezas. If the UN was there, war would cease to be a viable option, due to the lack of hostility between nations.

Mexico won the match, but that didn’t matter to my Irish friends. They were still advancing to the round of 16. Four days later I was again brought to a soccer match by my new Irish “brothers”. This time it meant something. The loser was going home. Ireland vs. Holland.

Have You Considered Self-Building Your next Home?

Filed under: Tool Stuff, Web Of Tuition — admin @ 4:42 am

Despite the recession, “self-build” homes are still popular. Why? Because they’ve always provided better value for money than simply purchasing a property. Hold on, what exactly is “self-build”? It’s a house you build yourself. Not quite literally by yourself, but you put yourself in the position as planner, foreman, architect of your home and allow trained workers do the job you tell them to do. More individuals are opting for the “self-build” route - in fact, the army of “self-builders” in the UK outnumbers the amount of properties being developed by any professional developer. The aim of self-build is to make a home to your exact specifications, not a boiler-plate design that commercial developers use.

I know what you’re thinking: “I’m no developer”. The good news is that self-build doesn’t have to involve you with the physical aspects of the home building (as a matter of fact, just 5% of self-builders in reality get involved with the actual construction work). Even when it comes to design, quite often this is delegated to a professional designer.. Self-build, more often than not, is about you articulating (in laymen’s terms), what you need to the house designer - who then develops a design based on your demands. This plan then becomes the blueprint the builders follow. Easy, eh? It’s not required to have any proactive involvement in self-build. Having said that, the DIY fantatic can use self-build as a chance to save some money by helping out with the aspects of self-build they have experience in - it’s your choice how much engagement you want during the build.

Since you get complete control over the specifications of the development, you can select the latest in technology, while large developers lag behind because they’re working to strict boiler-plate designs. You can install things like cost-saving lighting, automated climate, underfloor heating, and entertainment facilities throughout your home.

You must make sure the squad of workers you choose are total professionals and that they can build as a squad. No doubt you will require builders with experience of some rather potentially dangerous machinery used in construction, such as concrete cutting chainsaws, block and slab splitters, power / disc cutters, floor saws, and wood saws. Skills bring safety to the build too.

This article is only an introduction to self-build, and I trust it will inspire those of you who are perhaps a little daunted by such projects. It needn’t be time-intensive, and you won’t need any specific skills, but you will need to be careful as to who you hire, and you will need to cautiously work out the budget of the project.
