Every breath came out as steamy frost as I panted with the effort to breathe at an altitude of 12,000 feet in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Passenger jets traveled between cities at lower altitudes than this. The few birds at this height included the Andean Condor, with its nearly 12-foot wingspan, that is strong enough to carry off a dog or small child. I’m not in bad shape physically, but the effort here made me look like I was just finishing an Olympic marathon. Mist hung so heavily over the lake that when I cast, I saw nothing. Only a faint splash told me my Mepps had hit the water. My stiffened hands began an erratic retrieve. My guide and I chatted in an undertone like two errant school boys waiting outside the Principal’s office. My wife Doris huddled nearby jigging her Mepps spinner more to stay active and keep warm than to fish.

“We’re not going to use a boat”, I asked our guide.

“Not a good idea”, he responded. “The water’s too cold.”

You could just make out the dark bill of his baseball cap and the dark sleeves of his jacket through the mist. The frost from his breath as he spoke was noticeable too.

“Would it help to use a fiberglass boat?” I quietly shot back, steamy blasts of frosty breath punctuating my every syllable.

“There was a guy who fell in two summers ago”, he continued. “They got him out fast but he died from exposure from the cold water anyway. There was no way to save him from up here.”

“Oh” Thoughts of canoeing out onto the calm but chilly grey surface evaporated from my mind.

There was no time to think of anything else. My collapsible rod was dancing a jig in my stiff-from-the-cold hands despite the colorful, heavy mittens I wore. I had my first high mountain Rainbow Trout. It was a real beauty just like the scenery that surrounded the three of us.

The Paramo is a protected national park wilderness area of Ecuador in the Andes mountain range that passes from north to south from Venezuela to Chile. Most of the park lies at altitudes above 10,000 feet and is accessible by special permission only. The Andes splits into three mountain ranges near the border of Ecuador and Colombia in its northward trek. Several active volcanoes also punctuate the mountain range.

Its 3000 mile plus journey is from the Patagonia area in Chile from which you can view icebergs from the Antarctic shelf, to the steamy Llanos tundra and swamps of Venezuela where the dreaded Anaconda can grow to 25 or more feet in length. Deadly Piranha and merciless crocodiles lie in wait beneath waters born from the Amazon and Orinoco River basins. But the high-altitude lakes and streams of the Paramo are clear, cold and oxygen-rich, the habitat of Trout species worldwide.

Less than a dozen people fish the Paramo area each year. Trout can grow to impressive sizes and are plentiful. Three footers are not uncommon in the deeper lakes that can go down to 300 feet or more. There’s a daily limit of twelve fish, but it’s rarely reached. Most fishermen stop long before the effort required to bag their limit of scrappy rainbows and other deep-water trout species. The main cause is AMS - Acute Mountain Sickness that results from over-exertion at the high altitude without sufficient acclimatization. Uncontrolled it can actually kill you.

The spectacular scenery filled with top-of-the-world vistas and volcanoes like Chimborazo, Sangay and Tungurahua smoking through their snow-capped summits, unspoiled natural surroundings, water so pure people often drink it right from the lake or stream, and fishing grounds with virtually no pressure on them at all. These are but a few of the attractions the Paramo has to offer. Rugged, yes. Difficult and demanding, moderately. Worth it - absolutely.

This decline accelerates the aging process because the free radical load rises steadily unchecked unless one’s diet is supplemented with antioxidants.

Examples of antioxidants commonly used are: vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin A, and coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase.

I am always amused when people become fascinated with simple demonstrations of the power of even basic mathematics. We have become mostly a jaded society depending on the technological progress of corporations to give us more and more electronic gadgetry and the like. We have forgotten how all this technological stuff originates: via the harnessing of the knowledge of mathematics and science and their applications in practical ways.

Thus as educator and mathematician, I always enjoy a big smile when I can demonstrate the practicality of knowing even rudimentary mathematics. A good and solid understanding of basic geometry, arithmetic, and algebra can go a long way toward understanding many fundamental laws of nature and even permitting a high degree of general problem solving abilities. People are always amazed when I explain to them how I can tell time at the beach using the sun, or use probability to make general predictions, or to do seemingly amazing human calculator multiplications in my head. Yet all these feats are quite achievable even for the ordinary person.

Having said this, I can move toward the interesting sounding title of this article and explain how basic mathematics can be used for even such an odd sounding thing as finding a parking spot in a busy mall. We all know how frustrating this can be particularly around the holiday shopping season. Now man is a clever animal and if you ask people their method many will quickly volunteer that they have a great system. These systems range from stalking people who leave the mall to circling like hungry sharks waiting to feed on the next open spot.

Personally, I had always had a problem with the methods mentioned above and for this reason, I suppose, one day I thought about the problem and asked myself whether mathematics could solve this problem–or at least come up with a more practical method. Being a mall rat largely because of my wife’s intense love of such locale, I had many opportunities to drop her off in front and then begin the process of “search and destroy,” or more simply put, to wait for parking spots. Being a fan of the two mathematical disciplines of probability and statistics, I decided to see whether using some basic facts within these two areas could help me solve the problem. Thus sitting by the mall waiting for an open spot (mind you the times we would go to the mall were usually on Saturdays when choice spots were rare, and I would always want to park in a particular area near Macy’s where spots were even more limited because of the smaller parking area), I began to make some basic assumptions and to cogitate deeply.

Almost as by happenstance, I pieced together a rudimentary method, did some quick calculations and tested the underlying hypotheses. I surveyed the fully occupied parking area, targeted my preferred area to park, and predicted that within an interval of no more than five minutes one of those preferred spots would become available. Lo and behold within five minutes, a spot opened up. I was amused. Over the next ten or fifteen visits to the mall I tried and tested this method. Success after success after success. I analyzed both the basic assumptions and mathematics used and tested again and again. Always worked. I even demonstrated the method with people in the car. The reaction was always one of amazement when I could tell them within how long a spot would open up. To them, this always seemed like magic; however, a little thoughtful contemplation joined to some basic mathematics was the glue holding the mix together. In a follow-up article, I will reveal the method and the basic underlying assumptions, as well as the mathematical principles involved (for those who are squeamish about mathematics, fear not; for the explanations will not involve anything beyond the scope of layman mathematics, and my particular strength is the ability to boil down the esoteric and make it understandable). Teaching ESL to children is challenging but also very rewarding. Before I walk into a class of 10-year olds, I take a deep breath. Children have
no attention span AT ALL, and so I tell myself to slow right down before I start. Teaching children requires patience and a sense of fun and playfulness. lots of stimulation all the time.

3. Children learn by interacting with each other and with the teacher. Try to talk to each child individually each class. Whenever possible, have children working in groups and in pairs.

4. Review, Review, Review. New information is absorbed and has meaning when it is related to information students have already learned. Quickly review new concepts at the beginning of each class.

5. Encourage students to correct themselves and other students. Self correction or self-regulation is an important part of learning. Students should be encouraged to ask, “How am I doing?” and “Am I doing this right?” in an open and non-judgmental environment. Children raised in authoritative cultures may need additional re-inforcement.

6. Use what is learned in different contexts. The more contexts used the better, and the more concrete and ‘real life’ the contexts the better. Make it real for students by talking about them and their lives.

7. Praise, Praise, Praise. Encourage and build students up in a natural way. Learning occurs when students are motivated and feel good about themselves.

Looking back on my years of teaching, the children’s classes took a bit of getting used to, but were the most memorable and fun!

If we are to beat international terrorism and rid this evil from the planet then we need to have a more clear definition of what international terrorism really is. Then and only then can we confront it and make a resolution of all nations of the world that international terrorism on civilian populations is unacceptable and it will not be tolerated.

We know that international terrorism often as nation state sponsors. For instance; Iran sponsors Hezbollah and Hamas. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated and yet the United Nations and the Security Council will not agree to do anything about, while innocent people are killed by suicide murderous bombers and its this goes on week after week.

Either the United Nations and all countries around the world stand up against international terrorism and confront it or the United Nations began to those nations that sponsor international terrorism and those nations, which sit by and let it happen live in the greatest hypocrisy of the present period. We owe it to ourselves not to allow this sham of humanity to thrust itself into future periods.

If we fail to address international terrorism, to define international terrorism and to confront international terrorism, then we have failed humanity.
