By the way, the “Who Else” headline isn’t new. It goes back many decades.

Here’s the problem with copying a popular headline. When you have so many individuals copying a headline, it loses its effectiveness, appeal and uniqueness very quickly–especially on the Internet!

I have a much better alternative. Instead of copying someone else’s headline, put in the hard work that’s required and come up with your own classic headline.

Headlines that evoke some type of emotional response are the most effective and generally make more sales. Emotions motivate people into action. The stronger the emotion, the quicker the action. Therefore, headlines that make the reader excited about gaining something–or even more effective–afraid of losing something, will invariably produce the best results.

Using the proper words and phrases is critical. Below I’ve listed just a few of the words and phrases that, over the years, have proven to be very effective at grabbing the readers attention:

Save… Amazing… Finally… Love… Secrets Of… Announcing… Free… Luxury… Security… At Last… New… Bargains… Obsession… Breakthrough… Protect… The Truth About… Discover… How To… Rewards… Yes… Sale… You… Are You… Sex… Win… Improve… Do You…

After grabbing your readers attention, this is where you want to answer the question, “What’s in it for me?” To do this, you have to know a little about your target audience. What are they interested in? What are their priorities? What makes them respond?

Craft your headlines to use words and phrases that will pique your potential buyers interest. If you are targeting people interested in starting their own home business, try phrases such as “Stay Home And Make Money” or “Kiss Your Job Goodbye Forever”. If your product happens to be diet pills, try “Lose 10 Pounds In 10 Days”.

A word of caution: There is a point where headlines tend to get unbelievable. Make sure that your claims are truthful and that your copy supports their truthfulness.

Once you have a firm grasp of the aforementioned basics, look around your house and select several different products, and write as many headlines as you can think of for each product.

Write variations of the same headline until you have exhausted all the ideas you can think of. This will be both frustrating and difficult at first, but it will become easier with practice. Remember, nothing worthwhile ever comes easy.

After you have your list of headlines, make sure each one passes the test for the following criteria for a good headline. 1. Does it grab the readers attention? 2. Does it answer the question, “What’s in it for me?” 3. Is it truthful? If a potential headline does not meet these three criteria, rewrite it or eliminate it from your list altogether.

Continue using the process of elimination, one headline at a time, until you’re left with what you feel are the three best and strongest headlines, based on the criteria presented in this article.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to know for sure until you test them against each other. The headline that pulls the most sales or responses is your winner!

I said something last week I haven’t said in years. Where it came from, I really don’t know. It’s funny, you’re tooling along minding your own business for weeks, maybe months at a time, and then something you haven’t thought about for years pops into your noodle.

I don’t remember what brought it on, but I blurted out, “I think I’ll just quit everything and go fishin’.”

Where the phrase came from is a mystery because I can’t remember the last time I went fishing. It’s tragic when a person gets so busy he forgets about the truly essential things of life. There is nothing, in my mind (at least that’s my wife’s opinion) more essential in life than fishing.

In the heart of my tackle box, I am a true-blue fisherman, especially if it’s a cold morning and I am waste deep in frigid water.

Two types of people indulge in this business of fishing.

Some take up fishing as a hobby to get away from the rat race of life. And there is nothing like fishing to do just that.

When at work they think of fishing, and when fishing, they think of work. These are not real fishermen, they just play one on their holidays and no self-respecting sporting goods store should be allowed selling them any fishing tackle.

Then there are those who are born fishermen. It’s not something they chose, just like nobody chooses the color of their eyes, the color of their skin or what year they were born n although some fudge here a little. My motto: a little fudge is good for your soul. These are just born fishermen and there is nothing they can do about it. Whether it’s the sovereignty of God or predestination I’m not sure, I just know it happens.

Sometimes the best thing a person can do is drop everything and just go fishing. If more people did this, it might cut down on the war and violence in our world.

People need to know several things about “going fishin’” and fishermen in general. Fishermen are an abused minority and grossly misunderstood by the general population. As far as I know there is no voice standing up for these poor souls. Maybe its because voices can’t stand and then there are some voices I can’t stand.

In the first place, fishing has everything to do with the equipment n and not just any equipment will do. In some regards, it takes a lifetime to acquire the proper equipment to go fishing. This is where the true-blue fishermen are greatly misunderstood.

No true-blue fisherman would ever think of going fishing without his lucky hat. Going fishing without your lucky hat is like going to a restaurant without your appetite; what’s the point?

This essential part of his fishing equipment is lucky because it hosts several lucky fishing lures and flies, all meticulously arranged around the hat, representing some story associated with his fishing adventures. Some stories may be true, but not all, and in time the owner of the hat can’t remember which are true and which are not.

Another misnomer about going fishing has to do with catching fish. Let me state right here that catching fish has absolutely nothing to do with going fishing. In fact, no true fisherman would ever go fishing with the idea of catching any fish. For the most part, it is the furthest thing from his mind.

When a fisherman goes fishing and catches a fish, he has nothing to talk about. And whatever else a fisherman loves doing, it is talking.

If, for example, a fisherman goes fishing all day and catches 20 fish, there is only one subject he will talk about when he gets back. No, it is not the 20 fish he caught. After all, they are right in front of you; what else is there to say about it?

If the biggest fish, for instance, is 13 inches he cannot exaggerate and say it is 18 inches. The presence of the fish precludes stretching the truth, not that a fisherman would lie he just improves on the truth as he sees it.

Often, when a fisherman does catch a fish he throws it back under the pretense of it not being big enough.

The singular subject of a fisherman’s talk when returning from fishing is simply, “the one that got away.” No matter how big his biggest catch of the day is, the one that got away out-scales them all.

He may never have seen that fish, but it has nothing to do with his recitation of the one that got away. Something about that fish, whether real or imaginary, stirs the imagination of a true-blue fisherman. And, whether he saw that fish or not, he can talk for weeks, months and even years about that one.

A real fish in time spoils and eventually stinks; however, the one that got away always improves with age.

I find myself in good company in this area. No less a person than the apostle Peter did the same thing. He was frustrated and didn’t know what to do so he did the thing that came natural to him.

“Simon Peter saith unto them, I go fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.” (John 21:3 KJV.)

I did not go fishing last week but just the thought of it was an amazing elixir to my spirit.

In the year of 1448, the birth of printing, movable type replaced hand-copied manuscripts. Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type, is known for his heavy blackletter typestyle. This typestyle was popular in Germany at the time. From there, printers were inspired to improve on this system. Gutenberg was a goldsmith from Mainz, Germany, and he was the first to carve the characters of the alphabet onto metal punches (which were driven into other pieces of metal called matrices). The movable type could fit into printing presses. This process was called letterpress printing.

The first book Gutenberg printed with his movable type was the Bible. The scribes would take years to a lifetime to hand-write them, and now Gutenberg was able to make them in a fraction of the time. His invention enabled everyone to be able to circulate information so much easier.

Just recently while antique shopping, I found an old drawer filled with wood and metal typography. The printer’s drawer (that now hangs on my wall) means so much to meit made the history of movable type real to me. In light of studying about print and typography, I really appreciate what Gutenberg did for us. Written communication is all around us today; in fact, there is no end to what can be found. Books are so precious to us. John Milton said it best: “A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.”

And best yet, according to Daniel J. Boorstein: “A wonderful thing about a book, in contrast to a computer screen, is that you can take it to bed with you.” (Revised 2/16/2006)

So who are the lucky ones? Basically, you’ll have to be as fit as a flea with no family history of serious illness, under 45, in an office type job and probably applying for less than £250,000 cover. For everyone else there is going to be some hassle.

When an insurer provides an initial quote for life insurance, all they know is your age, sex and smoking status. They use these details to make an initial prediction of how long you are likely to live and on that basis they give you an initial quotation. They call it their “Standard Terms”.

If you want to progress your application you’ll have a multi-page application to complete. This isn’t as daunting as it may seem, as most online operators take your details over the phone and send you a copy of the completed application for you to check over. But the questions are extensive and if you miss out anything that later turns out to be significant, your insurance may well be invalidated. So be warned and take care!

The insurers use your application details to look out for anything that signals current or future concerns about your health or life style. Besides the obvious questions that reveal health problems, they also evaluate your weight, alcohol and nicotine intake, and any potentially inherited health problems. So if your father died of a heart attack or mother died from breast cancer, they’ll be concerned.

Then there’s your life style. If you’re in a type of job where accidents do happen, construction jobs are a good example, or you are involved in any form of dangerous sport or flying, your premium is in line for loading. They’ll even want to know whether you regularly travel to countries that are known to represent health risks for visitors. And whilst the law doesn’t allow discrimination against same sex relationships, the insurance companies will almost always insist on a medical for these applicants.

Insurers freely admit that the number of questions they ask is increasing. They claim it’s to reduce the number of claims they refuse. Whilst that may be partly true, the trend has also coincided with an increase in the proportion of applicants who are seeing their premiums loaded. Some years ago it was nearer 40% - today’s for some insurers the level is virtually 66%.

How much extra might you be asked to pay? That’s a bit like how long is a piece of string. But to give you a feel, a woman aged 40 receiving medical treatment for post-natal depression was recently faced with a 50% loading on an initial quotation of £7.60. A woman whose mother had breast cancer similarly faced a 50% loading. Seriously overweight people can also expect loadings of 50% to 100% or even refusal.

Faced with a loading what can you do? It’s important to appreciate that the insurance companies giving the cheapest initial quote are also likely to have particularly choosey medical criteria. That’s how they keep their quoted prices low. So if you’re faced with a loading, the best advice is shop around, Try one of the more expensive providers like Friends Provident who are sometimes a bit more lenient.

Whilst this may sound overly complicated, remember that over the years, an extra £10 a month on a 25 year policy represents £3,000 of your hard earned money. If you don’t have the experience or time to do this, and after few of us do, speak to an online life insurance broker.

Competition is high on the Internet and online brokers will normally reduce your premium by cutting their commission. Their systems are also well versed in finding alternative providers to alleviate loading problems. So keep things simple. Let your keyboard fingers do the walking and let the online broker do all the hard work!
