How do you Choose a Web Designer?

Filed under: A Better Web — admin @ 9:24 pm

In recent years, the web design industry has experienced a
growth rate of huge proportions, due entirely to the numerous
companies that have appeared as a result of continued Internet
expansion. The business world’s appetite for websites and
ecommerce solutions show no signs of abating in the near future,
and organisations and individuals who want to commission the
services of a web design company are faced with a dizzying
choice of options.

Companies will rightly advertise their creative skills,
technical expertise and design know-how. They will use lots of
technical terms and buzzwords in their marketing literature, but
because of the sheer number of companies all offering more or
less the same services, the point is reached where all the
advertising can begin to look almost identical.

How then does one go about choosing a competent design company
from the many available? If you are new to the workings of the
Internet, then the most obvious and perhaps safest method is via
personal recommendation, which by its very nature is a vote of
confidence from a satisfied customer and presents a golden
opportunity for an organisation to excel itself; after all,
there is nothing like a referral to start the ego twitching and
make a company go all out to impress.

An alternative method to a referral is of course to look on the
Internet itself. You will find literally thousands of web
designers advertising their services and at the same time
providing visual proof of their abilities via their own
websites. It is always a good idea to look at portfolio and
testimonial pages; you can then contact one or two of their
customers to get verbal references; these may help you in
deciding which design company is best for you.

Another option is to choose a company at random and talk to them
about what you expect from your intended website. Good designers
will listen to what you have to say and work with you; they will
gather as much information as possible from a customer before
going anywhere near a computer. Moreover, they will always be
willing to offer sound advice and will develop solutions to help
bring your ideas to life.

In addition, and perhaps the smallest sector of the web design
industry are the self-taught individuals who whilst having no
formal training or qualifications, do possess a natural talent,
aptitude and enthusiasm for web design, and who for the most
part produce extremely high-quality work often at a fraction of
the cost charged by the larger companies.

It is worth mentioning that there are so many capable and
talented designers available, that the hardest part of getting
your website built will probably be deciding which company or
individual you want to do it. Taking the time to look into all
the options should help to ensure that whomever you chose would
produce the required result.

Home Improvement - Don’t Exceed Comps In Your Area

Filed under: Best Home Improvement — admin @ 8:04 am

For most homeowners, the pride of ownership includes a consistent home improvement effort. While this makes sense, be careful you don’t improve the property so much that you can’t recover the costs when it is sold.

Home Improvement

You’ve picked up a heck of a deal on a home in a nice neighborhood. The purchase price was $200,000 and you put twenty five percent down [$50,000]. The comparable homes, “comps”, in the neighborhood appraised for $300,000. Yes, your home is a bit run down, but that’s why they have Home Depot and weekends! You’ll just fix the ugly ducking up and pocket a quick $100,000 in equity when all your projects are done. What a country!

This situation definitely has potential. The value of the home is so low when compared to the comps that a relatively quick equity grab certainly looks possible if the home can be fixed up. Off to Home Depot we go…

Let’s do an evaluation of our ugly ducking. Put another way, what needs to be done to get it on par with the other ducks in the neighborhood? Okay, we need new doors, new windows and landscaping in a very big way. The drive way looks like a toxic dump sat on it and we aren’t even going to get into the peeling, ugly paint on the home. Pricing everything, deciding to use homeowner labor as much as possible and so on, we find it is going to run roughly $50,000 to makeover our ugly duckling. It’s going to be a lot of work, but that’s what weekends are for. We should still come out with a $50,000 gain and $100,000 in total equity considering our $50,000 down payment.

Budgets and Temptation

The problem with the above scenario is it is very hard to stick to a budget. If you’ve owned a home, you’re already familiar with this problem. If you are buying a home for the first time, watch out!

With homeownership, the structure you own quickly evolves into “my home.” Once this occurs, you tend to view the quality of your home as a statement to the world and you want to show the world your best. Instead of buying moderately priced cabinets for the kitchen, you buy custom pieces that would make Bill Gates envious. Counter tops soon become marble counter tops. Refinishing the driveway evolves into putting in an entirely new one with brick inlays. And so it goes.

You are no longer trying to bring your home up to the standard of the neighborhood homes. You are trying to turn the home into a swan and swans are expensive. After making all your improvements, you are distressed to find the total cost being $90,000 instead of $50,000. For all your hard work and effort, you’ve realized only a $10,000 gain in equity.

In Closing

Make sure you objectively budget improvements and stick to those budgets. While there is something to be said for making a home glow, make sure it makes financial sense.

Holding On To The Dream

Filed under: Miscellaneous — admin @ 4:17 am

“Mumbler” Willie Wonka shouts at the little boy telling him his idea won’t work, “What is it with you? I just can’t hear you?”

Everyone has their critics, perhaps a partner, friend, parents, or work colleagues. You have a goal, an idea, or an ambition and they just try to pull you down and tell you it won’t work.

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willie Wonka had Mike TeaVee as his critic, constantly doubting and disbelieving in all of Wonka’s inventions and ideas. Willie’s method of dealing with this doubt was to not hear the criticism.

Why do they do this?

Partly it is because they are jealous of your ambition and desire to succeed. It may also be because in the past they tried to succeed and failed and they no longer believe it is possible.

Maybe they are trying to protect you from getting hurt. I mean, they wouldn’t want you working hard to achieve a goal and then for you to fail and get upset or hurt, would they?

Often times these people are doing the best they can with the resources they have available to them. Unfortunately, they may not have the right resources to help you achieve your goals and dreams.

This is why I tell people to be very careful who they share their goals with. There are times when it is good to tell people your goals. For example, if you know they are going to support you and encourage you to achieve your goals, then it is a good idea.

If you are going to have someone hold you accountable to your goal, then you must tell them. They will encourage you and ensure you achieve it.

However, if you are like most of the rest of us, there are only a few select people you can share your goals with. For most of the rest, you just have to keep quiet and not tell them what you are working towards; just let them see the results.

If you are not assured about achieving your goals then you really need to keep them to yourself. If you share your goals with other people then their criticism or disbelief can seriously impede your progress towards your target, or in the worst case, stop you completely.

Every successful person on the planet faces constant criticism and doubt. The difference between them and the millions who have never dared dream of their goals is that the successful people brush off the doubt and criticism and believe in themselves.

Admittedly, there are times when perhaps you ought to listen. If you are standing on top of a tall building thinking you can fly … that’s a good time to listen to the people who think you can’t. However, who’s to say that if you believe you could fly you could, but I wouldn’t test it and wouldn’t recommend you do either, just in case.

However, in general, you can take a leaf out of Willie Wonka’s book and ignore the critics around you and believe you can achieve … because your only limits are those you choose to accept or allow others to put upon you.

Exercise Won’t Hurt a Healthy Heart

Filed under: Better Shopping — admin @ 3:56 am

In 1924, famous cardiologist Paul Dudley White claimed that “Exercise can’t hurt a healthy heart.” Over the years, several poorly-controlled studies have shown that ultra-endurance events, such a running a marathon, might impaired heart function. Now a study from Northwestern University shows that Dr. White is still correct (Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, February 2006). The authors tested 45 patients before they ran the Chicago Marathon and re-tested them one month after the race. They demonstrated that the race had not caused any abnormalities in heart function.

This does not mean that everyone can go out and run a marathon. People who have damaged hearts can die from over-exertion. If you are a middle-aged person who is thinking about starting a vigorous exercise program, you should get a stress test, an electrocardiogram done while you are exercising vigorously. Tests done while a person is at rest often do not pick up blockages in the arteries leading to the heart. If your stress test shows warning signs, you may need further tests. If you pass your stress test, the odds are strong that you can start your exercise program safely. Once you have your doctor’s approval, begin your exercise program gradually to build up the strength of your skeletal muscles and your heart over several months. Then you will be ready to start serious training for your marathon or other endurance event.

Death & the Supernatural: Poetry/Five Poems

Filed under: Arts — admin @ 11:53 am

Supernatural Poetry

Here are five poems, what I calldeath and supernatural poems. Perhaps a bit bizarre, a few stanzas may be, but with unfailing subtlety of course, and a ting of acuteness, but we have to hag on if we want a good ride:

1.

Evil’s Creation

Thou knowith evil clings
To tender peace;
Nor does it heed one’s drowsy
Un-enthralled grief…

But softly it darkens
Twilight’s dunes;
With sprinkling shadows
Straight from the moon.

O Night! Who giveth birth…
To Evils plight?
As mighty murmurs
Reached my breast…:

“His name has no beginning
And no end…!”

But why…! O why?
Everlasting King,
Have you created…!
Such a thing?

As mighty murmurs
Reached my breast…:
“To see, whom you love
The very best!…”

2.

The First Depth

Struggling against unrestful skies
The warlords of eternal darkness
unseen to life’s obvious eyes
Ebb and seek the prize, dominion!

‘The First depth,’ the silence of the deep
Eternal legions with unrestful eyes
The Abysses storm, uncircumcised
The colossal ramparts now untied

‘The First Depth,’ with rival skies
Here, gathers demonic and divine
Now with storms, once hidden beyond
Armies of defense, build their saga

And I saw dreadful swords like suns
Thunder and lightening by Orion
This was the tidings of cosmic doom
If only man could have seen the gloom.

And the echoes I heard from the stars
Unnamed, immortal flames cast down
Gathered on earth for the final countdown
Armageddon’s titanic onset!…

#610 [4/2/04]

3.

Satan’s Daisies

Walk slowly, he is near
Above the clouds;
Talk softly, he can hear
Our venom mouths!

With his dark charcoal horns
And plotted lust,
He that was once fair
Is after us!

#612 [4/3/05]

4.

The Iron Raven

“You cannot escape, debased death
(Says the axiomatic, Iron Raven,
Who delivers the dead)
My imperishable Icons…!
Die, you shall, exhumed someday.”
Fame is no exception, to the Raven,
He seals fate, in ignoble ways!

#611 [4/3/05]

5.

The Marble Tomb

‘Twill be the same, the same
(I told him, when he was living),
A wood or marble tomb
In a hundred years, let’s say
Or a hundred so called days
What matters to he,
(He will be dead)?
A pompous monument
Will be of no goodyet
He built it out of Marble
(Nonetheless), not wood!

Your name will be forgotten
Amongst the rubbish and roots
O’er rotting dampness; and
Who will clean your tomb?
(I asked him all these things
Before he died; and he never
Did replyand built his tomb
Of marble, admiring its size!)

Youin there, in that tomb…!
You cannot hear a thing!!!!!
And out here they’re building
Yes…another mausoleum
For another rich man…!

Twelve Ways to Make Your Spouse Dislike Sex

Filed under: Living With Relationships — admin @ 10:31 am

It’s really not difficult to ruin what could have been great sex. If that’s your goal, following these twelve suggestions will ensure that, over time, your spouse will become very creative in finding ways to avoid having sex with you.

Of course, I’m writing this article “tongue in cheek” to make a point. But I can assure you that these behaviors will detract from your sexual relationship with your partner. That’s because sexual feelings are vulnerable to being affected by so many other factors, such as self-esteem, expectations, criticism, emotional intimacy, and pressure.

So here are the behaviors guaranteed to be “turn offs” to your spouse. In quote marks is the faulty reasoning that gets marriages into trouble. In parentheses (…), I’ve added a counterweight to the faulty reasoning.

1. Develop a set routine for when you want to have sexthe same time and same place every week.

“That way, you don’t have to wonder when you’ll have sexSunday night at 9:00 p.m. in the bedroomjust like clock work. No use leaving it to chance, right?”

(How boring. Try adding excitement by surprising your mate with something slightly new and different.)

2. Follow exactly the same “plays” and “moves” each time.

“This way you both know what to expect each time. It’s just too much work to come up with different things to try, and after the honeymoon period, it’s not really necessary, is it?”

(Instead, remember a variation on the old saying that variety is the spice of life… and of sex).

3. Drink a lot first so that you’re loosened up.

“If your mate doesn’t like the smell or wishes you wouldn’t drink so much before sex, it’s just too bad. You can’t let your spouse tell you what to do, can you?”

(Consistent and excessive intoxication during sex is a big turn-off and could indicate deeper problems.)

4. Only touch your spouse when your goal is to have sex.

“Save your hugs, wet kisses, and holding hands until you’re ready to signal that you want sex. That way your partner will associate your touch with sex and know what to expect, get my drift? Cuts down on misunderstandings, doesn’t it?”

(Actually, the best sex can be the result of hours or even days of buildup with no obvious sign of sex on the horizon. During this time, any sign of affection - a touch, a hug, some compliments - can be powerful foreplay that builds to ignite passion.)

5. Expect your spouse to deliver the sexual goods because you’re married.

“Your mate knows that every ‘good’ marriage partner owes sex to the other partner as part of his or her ‘duties.’ After all, isn’t this supposed to be one of the benefits of being married?”

(When sex becomes an obligation, it becomes as appealing as paying taxes. Instead, if your goal is to make the experience breathtaking for your partner, you’ll never have to invoke guilt or obligation to get sex.)

6. Push for sex even if your spouse seems reluctant and uninterested as long as he or she says “okay.”

“If the verbal agreement is there, ignore the behavioral signals that indicate reluctance. If your spouse didn’t really want to have sex, he or she should have said so up front, right?”

(Pay close attention to your mate’s body language. That can be more revealing of true interest in sex than words alone. You’ll damage your relationship if you forge ahead when your partner only agrees just to get it over with.)

7. Skip foreplay and get to the major action immediately.

“It takes too much time to bother with all that extra stuff. Besides, both of you have to go to work in the morning and need your sleep. You can’t afford to waste time.”

(The truth is, there is often a direct correlation to the amount of foreplay with the quality of the sex. The better the buildup, the better the payoff.)

8. Criticize your spouse’s sexual performance.

“After all, you’re only trying to motivate your mate to be a better sexual partner. It’s not healthy to keep things in, so he or she will just have to listen to your critique.”

(You will get more satisfying performance out of your mate by praising what he or she does that you like, rather than the contrary.)

9. Criticize your spouse’s physical appearance.

“If your partner has developed a beer belly or gotten flabby, you’re doing him or her a favor to say how much that turns you off. It’ll motivate your spouse to lose weight and shape up, which will help him or her in the long run.”

(The rule is: use positive strokes to motivate your partner. Negative criticism will poison your sex life.)

10. Answer your cell phone during sex.

“You just never know; this call might be important. Anyway, what’s the big deal? It’s not like you’ll never have sex again. You’ve been having sex for years now, so why should your partner get upset with an occasional interruption?”

(Respect your partner with your undivided attention to get back the same. Minimize all distractions if possible.)

11. Get it over with as fast as possible as long as you’re satisfied.

“Don’t ask your partner if there’s anything you can do for him or her. Just assume that everything’s okay unless your mate says something.”

(If satisfaction is not mutual, your sex life will suffer. The simple question a couple can ask each other - “How can I please you?” - works wonders.)

12. Jump up immediately and make your get-away afterwards.

“The faster you get finished, the faster you’ll be able to get to sleep. There’s no time to waste just lying there talking. You can talk tomorrow over breakfast.”

(Emotional closeness is the currency of intimacy and you can achieve it by allowing each other to share honest feelings. Pillow talk after sex is one of the best times for this.)

The Legend of the World Famous Louisville Slugger Baseball Bats

Filed under: Sports News + More — admin @ 2:26 pm

Louisville Slugger baseball bats, the official bat of Major League Baseball, got their start in 1880. That’s when little Bud Hillerich started work as an apprentice in his father’s woodworking business, “J.F. Hillerich, Job Turning.” Mr. Hillerich had emigrated from Germany decades past, and had settled in Louisville to explore his path toward the American Dream. His business thrived, and he was able to employ his son, as well as 20 other local craftsmen and workers.

Bud Hillerich was a baseball player at the time, so Bud used the opportunity of his coffee breaks and off moments to make his own baseball bats. He got so good at the craft that he began to craft bats for several of his teammates, too.

There is some debate over which of these bats should be called the first actual Louisville Slugger. Some would even argue that Bud had nothing to do with his father’s changing the course of his business, from everyday woodworking to the baseball bat world. But experts at the actual present day Louisville company agree that Bud Hillerich had some serious doing in involving his father’s business in the baseball world.

And according to the company lore, the first official Louisville Slugger baseball bats came out in 1884. Bud created them for Pete “The Old Gladiator” Browning, who was a leader on the professional baseball team in Louisville for the American Association. The team name was the Eclipse.

As the legend goes, Bud was out watching his hero during a game on a crisp spring afternoon. The Old Gladiator was at the plate, when with one fell swoop the batter shattered his bat. Only seventeen at the time, but ever the brave entrepreneur, Bud marched down to his hero and offered to make him a bat. Browning agreed.

The end result, the first Louisville Slugger baseball bats, pleased Browning so much that he then smacked three hits with them in the next game. A legend was born.

The Shintae
By Brian R. Hill
Publish America (2005)
Reviewed by Rebecka Vigus for Reader Views (2/06)

The Shintae takes the reader to a distant time where survival of the fittest is the law. Mr. Hill pits the evil mountain people, Cantaens, against the forest people, Maraens. The
quest is to find the Shintae, a stone of magic powers, and unharness the magic.

Kaer, “a native of the forest lands of Marae”, he was just short of six feet in height, he was tall for his race.” He had found the Shintae and was returning home when he was caught unawares by the evil Cantaen warrior, Sartae.

“Sartae was a terrifying sight.” Sartae’s reputation for torture in the name of fun has reached Kaer, who only anger’s the warrior by laughing in his face. Leaving Kaer for dead, Sartae and his troops return to their homeland to try and harness the magic of theShintae.

Meanwhile, Kaer recovers and is joined by Angharad on a quest to recover the stone. Together they set out to recapture the Shintae and return it to Marae. Separated during a blizzard the two each go their separate ways toward recovering the stone.

The detail of man vs the elements in this story is enough to keep the reader glued to the pages. Who will triumph in the battle for the Shintae? Will the Cantaens be able to take
over the Maraens? Will the Maraens outwit the Cantaens?
Does Kaer recover? Does he have one last battle with Sartae? Do Angharad and Kaer meet up again? These and many other questions are only answered if you read the book.

As a first book, Brian R. Hill has a hit on his hands. I found it to be an easy read, yet one I had trouble putting down. The action begins in the first two pages and is non-stop right
to the end of the book. I look forward to seeing more by this author.

Tropical Aquarium Plants for Beginners

Filed under: Puppies + Pets — admin @ 7:44 pm

It is not hard to understand why plants are present in so many aquariums. Lush and healthy plants are stunning to look at and will create a much more natural environment in the aquarium. Most fish species feel safer and less stressed when they have plants to hide among, and many species will never thrive in an unplanted aquarium. If your fish species inhabit densely grown waters in the wild, they will feel very insecure in a plant without any vegetation. A lot of fish species are however rock dwellers and can get the same sense of security from caves and rocky formations in the aquarium. If your fish disturb the plants and damage them by nibbling of the leaves or digging up the roots, caves and wood can be a better solution than plants. If uprooting is the main problem, you can choose plants that float and do not require any anchorage in the substrate. If your fish are vigorous plant eaters, artificial plants can be used instead of live plants. It can also be possible to find a few live plant species that your fish do not like the taste of. If your fish only nibble on the plants, you can choose strong and fast growing live plants that can tolerate some snacking.

Plants will not only provide your fish with valuable shelters and make your aquarium look beautiful; they will also help you to keep the water quality up. Fish and plants coexist in the wild and will complement each other well in the aquarium. The waste products released by fish will contain compounds that the plants can use as nutrition. Organic waste will therefore be contained within the plant instead of floating around in the water where it can harm the fish. You should however keep in mind that these compounds will not “disappear”, they will just be confined within the plant. If you allow dead and decaying plant material to stay in the aquarium, the organic compounds will be released again and begin to pollute the water. Plants must therefore be regularly pruned and unhealthy parts must be removed from the water as soon as possible. In return for the organic compounds that they receive from the fish, the plants will produce oxygen which is essential to the fish. The plants will also use dissolved carbon dioxide and thereby lower the levels of carbon dioxide in the aquarium.

The direct exchange between fish and plants is important, but it is not the only thing that help keeping the water quality up. The plants will also provide a home for a wide range of micro organisms that are beneficial for the ecosystem in the aquarium. Plants are also capable of inhibiting ugly algae growth since plants and algae compete over the same nutrients.

Many fish species will never spawn in an unplanted aquarium. Some species need the plants to feel safe enough to spawn, while others need leaves to attach their eggs on. A densely planted aquarium will also increase the fry survival growth if you wish to raise fry in the same aquarium as adult fish, since the fry will hide among the plants. Busy plants with a lot of smaller leaves are ideal for this purpose. It should however be noted that there are other ways to provide fry with good shelters. Newly hatched fry can for instance hide among larger marbles on the bottom of the aquarium. Caves, roots, stones and artificial aquarium decoration will also give the fry hiding places where they can stay out of harms way.

A plant relies on photosynthesis and light is therefore essential to it. A fish only aquarium requires little light, but if you wish to keep a densely planted aquarium you might be forced to install new lights. Fluorescent light is better than the standard incandescent light in planted aquarium. Some plant species are very demanding in require even stronger light than the fluorescent, but these species are not recommended for beginners. Fluorescent lights are more expensive than incandescent lights, but fluorescent lights will on the other hand burn cooler and use less electricity. Java Fern and Java Moss are two examples of suitable beginner species. They are tough plants that can survive in a wide range of pH-values and water hardiness. They can even be kept in a slightly brackish aquarium, such as a Molly aquarium.

Unlike many other aquatic plants, Java Fern should not be planted in the substrate in the aquarium. Java Fern should instead be attached to rock, wood or aquarium decorations where it will form roots. Once your have purchased your first Java Fern or Java Moss, the plants will propagate themselves. New plants will develop on the old plants, and eventually break off. You can attach these tiny plants to some type of decoration in the aquarium and wait for them to grow large.

Article provided by AC Aquarium fish which is a general aquarium website featuring a lot of information for beginner aquarists including a free ebook named Tropical Fish - A beginners guide.
